This is a story of how the internet, and cooperation among the Greater Los
Angeles Rescue Community and the LA County shelters saved a life. This
story is true. It happened this week. But there are other stories
like this that happen every day.
This is Mary. She is named after the LA County Carson employee who
played the key roll in saving her life. Mary picked up the phone and
called Julie of Dobie Rescue. She listed five pets that were going to be
euthanized the next morning. Mary was one of them.
Julie called me (Small Breed
Dog Rescue). I was told there was a "Yorkie mix" and a
Maltese. I went down and sight unseen bailed them both out. I picked
them up Friday evening.
I was pretty horrified at what I saw. See before picture. She
smelled bad. She looked worse. I was dismayed.
I picked her up and took her home. I reluctantly petted her, getting my
hands dirty in the process. Then I noticed her ears were cropped EXACTLY
like a miniature schnauzer's ears. Hmmmm!!
So I called Peggie Blakely of Miniature Schnauzer rescue and she invited me
to bring her down.
Peggie is not only Miniature Schnauzer rescue, but she also operates a
boarding kennel, a grooming salon, and has her own purebred schnauzers that she
shows and occasionally breeds. She knows one when she sees one.
She brought out her clippers and her scissors, and other grooming supplies
and she and her husband went to work. And viola!!! I have a
"black, 12-3/4 inch purebred miniature schnauzer, about three years
old."
I would never have guessed. Peggie was disappointed that she was not
called to rescue this little one, as she does indeed rescue all purebred
miniature schnauzers that are adoptable and turn up in the area shelters.
But quite frankly, I do not know of anyone that would have guessed that is what
Mary is. For one thing, she is "black - with a SUNBURN".
That means the black got faded in the sun and turned red (yorkie color).
Thus the Yorkie label. Had she been the traditional salt & pepper that
we all visualize when we think of this breed, I am sure she would have been
contacted.
The last chapter is when Mary was adopted into that forever home that she certainly deserves.
She is now living in Pacific Palisades in a wonderful home.
If you would like to adopt a miniature schnauzer, please contact Peggie
Blakely, at bmajersnz@aol.com
She always has one or two rescues looking for homes.
