This is Pearl - a six month old female Westie puppy mix.  She actually just got adopted - AMRT had over 50 people apply for her.  I included her today instead of just moving her to the adopted page because I wanted you to see that the SPCA-LA would turn away a six month old incredibly highly desirable puppy.  Adopted and now living in Marina Del Rey

Female five year old ten pound fuzzy white thing.

7/10/2004 Moved to:

Orange County Humane Society - 21632 Newland, Huntington Beach.  714-536-8480.

This is Joy, a four pound female older Chihuahua.  She is called Joy because, on this holiday she is very Joyful that she is still alive and healthy and ready for a new home.  Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

Our vet believes she is about ten, which is a perfect age for a tiny little dog.  She is cuddly and affectionate and very grateful for any attention she gets.

This is Janet - a two year old female Chihuahua mix weighing about ten pounds.  Janet is a little shy and frightened right now.  But she should settle in pretty soon. Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.
This is Wanda, a ten year old pure Pomeranian, about eight pounds.  She is a sweet, friendly little dog.  Except for some missing hair in the back she is in good condition and ready for a new home.

Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

Wanda had growths on both her eyes.  These weren't cataracts but some sort of calcified thing that required surgery to remove.  Expense:  $750.

Omar is a pleasant,  nice little dog who weighs probably about 8 pounds.

Where are all these black and tan Chihuahua type dogs coming from?

This is Sparkle.  He is an eight pound Chihuahua mix who is very happy to be alive to see the holiday.   Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

Our vet believes he is about five.  He had been hit by a car and our vet did x-rays.  He found a tiny hairline fracture that had already nearly healed.  Our vet believes that no further action is necessary and he will be just fine.  He just shouldn't be running marathons for a month or two.

This is Iris.  She is a two year old ten pound interesting mix.  She does look a lot like a doxie sort of.  Very low to the ground and long.  But that tail!  It's about half the size of a typical dog.  Either she was born that way or someone for some reason docked that tail to a very unusual length.   Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.
Doxie was transferred to Doxie Rescue in San Diego - for info on adopting please email pawlvr@aol.com   Her name is Reba and she is a Dapple Doxie, which makes her rare.  Notice the one blue eye.

Costs:  to cure Scurvy - $20.

Six guinea pigs!!!  We didn't realize that the SPCA-LA doesn't take any other critters besides dogs and cats.  So if you want to adopt one, don't go there.  And if you are getting rid of some, please think this out carefully and try to find a rescue group instead, as the SPCA won't take them, leaving the City very few options.  This group of piggies were very lucky to have found a rescue group willing to take them.

Photo coming Purebred chow puppy.  Her fatal flaw is that her eyelashes turn in - and this needs to be corrected.

Shelter fees:  $95 - Eye surgery estimated $450

Shelter fees $95

Vet expenses $675 so far - and she needs the stainless steel rod in her leg removed in about 8 weeks, which will generate an additional expense.

This is Nutmeg - a two year old scruffy terrier who has a broken leg.  She is currently at our vets and a treatment plan is being worked out.

She is sweet and friendly and otherwise very healthy.

Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

Shelter fees:  $95, vet expenses $421.65
Update - Very good news.  Mitzi did NOT have a prolapsed rectum!!  Our vet couldn't believe that anyone could think so.  She had a fatty tumor that was scooped out and discarded during her spay.  This misdiagnosis could have been very fatal as some of my friends discouraged me from taking her - saying she would be too expensive.   And she is very very sweet and cute and friendly.   Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

This is Mitzi, a 7 year old white terrier mix.  She looks somewhat like a Westie but about half the size, probably about 9 pounds.

There is nothing wrong with her eyes - this is just the flash from the camera.

Her fatal flaw is that she has a prolapsed rectum.  She needs some surgery to correct it.

Shelter fees:  $45.00
Purebred male English Setter - this is not a common breed in Southern California - Now with English Setter Rescue.

They report:

He's a beautiful boy and could have easily been a finished
champion in his time.

Chihuahua mix- Shelter fees: $95

This dog was moved to a foster home in San Diego - for details on his adoption please email me directly - carol@amrt.net

Shelter fees:  $95 - vet expenses not yet determined
This is Maurice - a teacup poodle weighing about four pounds and probably about ten years old.

He was in horrid condition.  Fur not only matted but glued to his body and hard as a rock like cement.  I had to chip it off very carefully with a pair of scissors.

He has a laceration on one eye and only has one testicle.

Reason for denial to SPCA - all of the above.  Horrid condition requiring medical care and only one testicle causing a more expensive neuter.

This is Jenni, a 7 year old Chihuahua mix weighing about six pounds. She loves to be held and carried around. She appears to be ok with other small dogs. She can be a bit fiesty with certain people so no kids please..... once she knows you she is a friend for life though.

At the shelter she was quite unfriendly.  Sadly this is not unusual for tiny little dogs in big scarey shelters.  Now she is sweet and affectionate.

Shelter fees:  45 - dental work $150.  Available via the AMRT small dog adoption program.

Female Boxer - She is friendly and wiggly and sweet as can be. BUT (of course), her right eye is blue and hazy. I don't know whether she is blind in it or not, but I imagine she can't see anything through it. Brindle with a white chest.

Transported to Boxer Rescue in Encino. - Cost $95.

Photo - I have one but can't find it.  I will try to get one.

Shelter fee - $95

Candy is a five year old 35 pound spaniely type dog.  Her family gave her up because they were going on vacation.  I wonder if they do this every year.

She is reported to be good with children and other dogs.  She seems to be an ideal family pet.

I wonder how the children will feel returning from vacation to find their dog is gone.

Anyway, she has been transferred to the Orange County Humane Society - 21632 Newland, Huntington Beach.  714-536-8480.

This is a 7 month old boxer mix puppy probably with wire haired terrier.  He has a scruffy coat and brindle markings with a cropped tail.

This is Sammy, a nine month old Chihuahua terrier mix who was just given up by his owner because he isn't good with children and other dogs.  Moved to Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach - note to parents - most dogs under ten pounds are not good with kids - the kids just are too much for these little things.  They are Granny Dogs. (Your grandmother wants one).  Shelter fee $60 adopted.
Little calico kitten with a broken leg.

We have some good news here.  Our vet, Dr. Yassa of Hacienda Heights, believes he can save the leg.   We won't know for sure let but things look very hopeful for her.

Update - 2/12/04 - she did not need to lose her leg or have extensive surgery.  Very lucky kitten.  And adopted already.

Four month old rat terrier mix puppy- delivered to Orange County Humane society - "has mange".   adopted.

Guinea Pig - Peruvian - adopted.

Shelter Fees:  $10 - vet expenses not yet determined.
This is Rudolf - a pure mini poodle who was hit by a car and picked up Christmas eve by Long Beach animal control officers.   He hung around the vet's office and then moved to the shelter where his family found him.  However, they declined to take him back and signed him over to the shelter.  We were asked to take him and gladly did so.

It turns out that nothing is broken!!  Nothing dislocated!  He's scraped up a bit and he was really dirty and skinny possibly from being on his own for a while.  And also looked like he had been recently groomed and manicured.  A really nice cuddly kissy dog who deserves a good home.  He was neutered while being x-rayed so he should be ready for a home in a couple of weeks perhaps.  Adopted

Salt & Pepper Scruffy terrier - photo coming.

Shelter fees $95. -

This cute little scruffy terrier was not chosen by the SPCA-LA and we moved him down to the Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach.  For more info on adopting him call 714-536-8480.

They are located at 21632 Newland.

interesting news - his owner turned up for him two days after we moved him to Orange County Humane Society - so it looks like this dog and his owner were reunited.   Had we not been there, this family would have returned from Christmas vacation to find their dog had died at the shelter.  More interesting news, the family that lost him didn't want to pay to get  him back.

About a four years old and so cute.  Reason SPCA-LA didn't want him - flea allergies.  Update - Adopted.

Shelter fees $95
This cute little terrier Chihuahua mix was not chosen by the SPCA-LA and we moved him down to the Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach.  For more info on adopting him call 714-536-8480.

This cute little four year old pure Pomeranian male  was not chosen by the SPCA-LA and we moved him down to the Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach.  For more info on adopting him call 714-536-8480.  This little guy weighs about six pounds.

They are located at 21632 Newland.

Update - adopted.  Well a six pound young pure pom, that was a no brainerl

Shelter fees $95
This pure mini poodle, male, only needs some dental work.  He's maybe about six to eight years old.  A real sweet little guy.  Dirty and needs a bath.  For information on his adoption please email me directly, carol@amrt.net

Update  adopted- Arlo is living in a senior assisted living facility in Irvine.  He goes from lap to lap all day and he spends each night in a different bedroom.  This is the perfect arrangement for a dog like this.  It is a shame that our seniors must give up their pets when they move into these types of homes.  And this is a good solution for the residents and the senior dogs.

Yorkie/Silky mix - injured - moved to San Diego  - Shelter Fee:  $95.
This dog was immediately adopted in San Diego.  Required no additional medical expenses except neuter.

Shelter fee:  $95 - Expected vet bill $55
This is Everest, a two year old Chihuahua/terrier mix, weighing about eight pounds.  He got his name due to his special skill at climbing up difficult places, like a 12 foot chain link dog kennel.

To me he looks a lot more like a fox terrier or rat terrier than a Chihuahua which would be consistent with his special climbing abilities.

He will probably do best in a home without a yard so that his family will not be tempted to leave him in one unattended.  He would do best inside the house most of the time, with leash walks for potty time.

Reason for denial to SPCA - Kennel cough

Update - Adopted.

JoJo - a two year old black & white male cocky poo.

His fatal flaw was that he was born with one testicle that did not drop.  So the neuter is more expensive.    Thus the SPCA decided to not choose him.

Shelter Fees:  $95

Neuter:  98.50

Update - Adopted.

Update - Adopted and now living in Long Beach.

This is Amber, a six year old Pekinese.  She is a nice, quiet, gentle dog.

Her fatal flaw is that her head tilts and she has a heart murmur.  So the SPCA didn't want her.  Very sweet dog

Shelter fees:  $95 - Spay - $55

This is Monty.    He is a two year old scruffy terrier mix weighing about 14 pounds.  Cute, quiet, friendly, potty trained.  A perfect dog.

He was turned down by the SPCA-LA because he had evidently been hit by a car and at the emergency room they sutured a cut.

He is fine.  He needed no additional care.  His neuter appointment is scheduled for Dec. 5.

Expenses:  Long Beach Shelter Fees:  $67

Neuter - VCA La Mirada - estimated $50

Update - Adopted and living in Cowan Heights

Expenses:

Long Beach Shelter $10.

VCA La Mirada - x-rays and preliminary diagnosis $400

Tustin Veterinary Surgical Center - $2,600.

This is Moxie - a ten month old puppy who  has had a lot of bad luck.  Now she needs some good luck.  We originally called her Mopsie but a clerical error at the hospital changed her  name and we liked it better so we kept it.

First she got hit by a car and wound up at the Long Beach Shelter.  There the great SPCA-LA decided not to take her so she was condemned to die.  Only now the City staff call us when a dog is out of luck and we do what we can.

Only thing is that she had a fractured pelvis that was protruding into her intestines and she needed surgery NOW to survive.  And every single orthopedic veterinarian in the entire country was flying to Washington,  DC for some sort of conference, except ONE.  And luckily for us he was able to fix her.  But it cost us about twice what it would have if we could have used our own vets.  Oh yes, then  her foster home was in Mount Baldy and she had to be evacuated ahead of the fires.

She has been adopted and is now living in Costa Mesa..

Expenses:

Long Beach Shelter $95

Costs to cure kennel cough - ZERO

Neuter expense - $45

This is Grizzly, a two  year old  male pom.  He is a nice friendly little dog, about ten pounds.

Picked up by Long Beach Animal Control, Grizzly was another dog the SPCA-LA would not take.  We don't know why.  Did he have a crooked ear?  An eye the wrong color?  Did he fart?  Burp?

He's young and pretty and healthy and the SPCA-LA condemned him to die.  Lucky for him the Long Beach City folks are now asking rescue groups to take the dogs the SPCA-LA will not.

He has been adopted and is living in El Monte.

Expenses:

Long Beach Shelter - $95

Vet - neuter and x-rays - $145.

This is Rambo.  It seems that he wasn't fed and was confined somehow so that his hind legs would not hold his weight.  He was only six weeks old.  The SPCA wouldn't take him so we did.

Our vet says he will be just fine with some food and exercise.   X-rays showed no congenital or skeletal problems.  This is a sweet, kissy, friendly, lovable puppy that deserved better than he got from the SPCA-LA.

He has been adopted and is now living in Lake Forest.
